Ky-Ra’

24 10 2011

As in my last post, today I bring you a new box art from Kabuki Models.

This is Ky-Ra’, sculpted by Juan Navarro Perez in 54mm, and directly inspired by Boris Vallejo and Frazetta’s girls. With an exaggerated musculature while wild and sensual look. That piece is divided in five parts, plus a small scenic base. And it’s almost clean of mold lines or bubbles. As occurred with the Steamborg, the copy quality is really good.

The color scheme, like the character design, is based on Aurelio Lecis’ art work. Although in this case, they wanted more tanned skin than the illustration.

Aurelio Lecis art work

The work of the skin is done with the airbrush by 90% and due to my lack of skill with this tool, I had to repeat the process on four occasions.

I used as base of the skin a Brown Sand mixed with a little Red Leather, which was shining with Sunny Skintone, Basic Skintone and some Light Flesh. Also I used glazes for the shadows of a dark reddish brown, almost staining the areas more than paint them. For medium tones I used Snakebite Leather and Red Leather as a glaze.

The work in the metallic parts was as usual,  starting from a very dark tone and following shades and tones, ending with the lights and effects.

Anyway, I hope you like it. And any criticism, question or comment is welcome.

WIP Albanian Chieftain

9 09 2011
These days I’m working on a miniature to my private collection. An Albanian Chieftain early 19th century. By Romeo Models’ brand and a size of 54mm.

With this figure expected to begin a large collection of oriental cut figures tinged with Arabs. It’s a subject that fascinates me and eventually I would have a good collection of them.

With this figure I’m enjoying, although the theme of the embroidery is something that even I find it hard to control. In particular the symmetry. But it is an inducement on which I have to work.

The part that I like are the sleeves, although it has a little glossy and not very well in photos. But I think I got a good velvety effect.

I leave also the base color I used for yellow, since it is a color that can be complicated at times, and could help to someone.

From the base I used Snakebite Leather and Japan Uniform. To which I add  Golden Brown at first, to keep you going for yellow. And for lights I just come up with Flat Yellow, Ice Yellow and Light Flesh. All this colours contains white so the yellow is desaturated in the lights, so to get a good contrast it’s important to try to saturate the midtone and shadows. To this end, add to the base Violet Red, in amounts increasing as I go considering. To the final shadows just  adding black to the mix and giving in certain folds to give the feeling of tension.

This is the work described in general terms. Then you have the hard work, outlines, midtones… But I think that explanation is fine to begin with, it already to go to practice.

I leave the photos as the work goes. As always, criticism, advice and opinions of all kinds are welcome!

The waiting

Well, finally I’ve finish the swordsman. In the final pictures the light effect has been lost, although in the end hasn’t been exaggerated as I was looking for.Anyway the client is very happy with the final result, so that’s important.

As final painting comment, the wall. To do it, as I said in my previous post, I use the airbrush to mark the lights and then I finished it with oils. The ease of the use of oil is its ability to smooth the color as much as we want and being able to make more believalable textures, adding Enamel to the oils. In the picture of the scenes you can see the effect of light and shadow that it’s lost in the final pictures.

In short, a figure that entertaining and I enjoyed it. Also, I’m having more freedom to paint coletos!

“The waiting” WIP3

I continue with the figure. The hat and cloak go black. The hat is now finished, but I think it needs some tones … maybe later.

It’s also almost finished the jerkin. For the base I used Andrea’s Burnt Sienna, with a little Cavalry Brown and black. Then lights and shadows with some general brush strokes, almost drawing the textures, to finish with medium tones of ink of Chesnut lighted parts and blue-green in the shadows.

I think the picture shows the difference  intensity from one area to another and you see the part that is more enlightened.

I am very happy with the result that I see!
